INTRADERMAL ALLERGY TESTING AND IMMUNOTHERAPY

Intradermal (skin) allergy testing identifies which environmental allergens are causing your pet's symptoms.  The results are used to formulate a customized allergy serum administered by injection or mouth drops.

SKIN BIOPSY AND DERMATOPATHOLOGY

A skin biopsy is obtained using local anesthesia and a tool that collects a skin sample the size of a pencil eraser.  This minimally invasive test can help diagnose different skin diseases.  The sample will be reviewed by a board-certified pathologist, as well as Dr. Haarstad.

BACTERIAL CULTURE AND SENSITIVITY

A sterile cotton swab is used to collect a sample from the skin or ear to identify which bacteria is causing the infection.  The test results include a list of recommended antibiotics to treat the bacterial infection.  This test can identify methicillin resistant Staphylococcus bacteria.

EAR DISEASE MANAGEMENT

Ear infections may be chronic (long term and/or recurrent).   They can affect the external ear canal or the deeper middle ear.  Unresolving ear infections may need more extensive medical management or a deep ear cleaning procedure.  Deep ear cleaning is done with the patient under anesthesia using an endoscope to evaluate the ear canal and ear drum.  This procedure can also identify and remove foreign bodies or tumors.

FUNGAL CULTURE

This test can identify ringworm and deeper fungal infections by isolating organisms on special culture plates.

DIAGNOSTIC FOOD TRIALS

Food allergies can be diagnosed by feeding a strict prescription or home cooked limited ingredient diet for 8-12 weeks. This diagnostic diet plan can be performed while keeping your pet comfortable.

EQUINE DERMATOLOGY

We treat horses too!  This includes allergy testing and allergy shots for environmental allergens.  Symptoms of environmental allergies in horses include itching, recurrent skin infections, hives, and heaves.

SKIN SCRAPING, CYTOLOGY AND TRICHOGRAM

Surface samples gently collected with clear tape, cotton swabs or plucking hair (trichogram) can identify secondary bacterial, fungal and mite infections.
